Telling it Simply (ILGA World 2020)

ILGA World (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association) is a powerful voice in the LGBTI community. ILGA World is global federation of nearly 2,000 organisations spread across more than 150 countries, doing advocacy work and campaigning for LGBTI rights. They were a key player in convincing the WHO to remove homosexuality from their list of illnesses. For an organization with this much clout, their 2020 annual report is pleasantly free of bombast and gimmickry.

The report is slim, at just over 40 pages, and designed with a view to easy, fast reading. Information is presented neatly and the design relies on a cheerful colour palette with a friendly, rounded, ‘hand-drawn’ typeface for titles and headers. The PDF of their report is scattered with links that take a reader back to the LIGA World website, for further information – the section on ‘stories from the community’ is particularly effective as you get a real sense of the federation’s scope of work.

Another noteworthy aspect of the report is the voice used in the text. It comes across as measured, kind and thoughtful – a rare feat in an annual report and particularly effective here, as it creates a powerful impression of disparate groups of people coming together and speaking in one voice.

Perhaps a little more attention could have been paid to the intricacies of typesetting (there are some jarring white spaces in the justified text blocks every now and then) but these are minor quibbles, given what this report achieves with its modest budget. In the cluttered world of slick, overproduced annual reports, this one is a breath of fresh air.
