The 2013 annual report of the Calgary Society for Persons with Disabilities is an incredibly simple one with a message as clear as day. The CSPD is committed to provide individualized housing to those with disabilities, thereby empowering them to live their lives to the fullest.
The cover page is white, giving the reader no clue to what the report contains. Once the reader has entered the report, it is clear the intention of the organization is to move focus from themselves and onto their message instead.
The report uses a monochrome palette. Combined with photography is bold typography. This report really does not waste words. Text sections are sparse.
They say a picture speaks a thousand words and this report proves it. Black and white photographs documenting a day in the life of a female client, serve as a reminder that her ‘normal’ is vastly different from ours.
Each image is unique, taken from various angles and in all the usual settings in this woman’s life. Some images may even come across as tangential, such as the one on page 30, but in capturing these moments the report is pushing us to really consider other lives.
